2020 Fireworks Guide for Decatur, IL
We planned to put out a 2020 fireworks guide for our Decatur community since the beginning of the year. However, as the months went on, we wondered if there would be fireworks happening at all. And now, as the 4th of July is right around the corner, it's pretty clear that public gatherings and fireworks are still few and far between.
We confirmed with the city of Decatur that there will be no fireworks put on by the city in 2020. That goes for most other cities as well, including Springfield's beautiful downtown fireworks, Mt. Zion, Bethany, Champaign, and Arthur. (We called the city of Mt. Pulaski, and they are waiting to hear a final decision from the mayor.)
Even though most events are canceled, there still may be some hope if you want to catch some fireworks to celebrate Independence Day.

For the most part, fireworks are banned at the federal, state, and local level, but there are still a few kinds of novelty items you can use. Those include sparklers, snappers, booby traps, tricky noisemakers and cigarette loads.
Any kind of firework can be dangerous – including sparklers, which cause the most harm to children in the form of 2nd and 3rd degree burns.
Also, there's always that guy in the neighborhood with an endless supply of fireworks that can only be set off after 90% of people are sound asleep. Don't be that guy.
If you can't make it to a fireworks show this year – they are slim pickings after all – focus on food, fun, and family. You can't go wrong with a nice barbecue and a few rounds of charades.
